The Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry receives the Status of the National Group of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry IFPI.

July 11
ZPAV is officially registered. June 5
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry IFPI opens its office in Warsaw (IFPI Poland Foundation -- in 1995 changed its name to IFPI Warsaw)

July 11
First anti-piracy action organized by ZPAV -- anti-piracy concert under the slogan: "Pirates Kill Music"; in Warsaw. Performances were made by: Aya RL, Czesław Niemen, Edyta Bartosiewicz, Oddział Zamknięty, Closterkeller, Wilki, Elektryczne Gitary, Martyna Jakubowicz. Anti-Piracy Day in Polish TV: interviews with artists and copyright specialists.

1993

According to IFPI estimates phonographic piracy in Poland exceeds 90 percent of the total market.

April 30
Anti-piracy concert in Warsaw, organized within the framework of the "Day of Silence"; -- the artists' protest against copyright infringements. Performances by Stanisław Sojka, Ryszard Rynkowski, Krystyna Prońko, Kayah.

June
Police initiates first actions against phonographic piracy.

September 2
ZPAV begins to run the hologram project.

1994

May 24
The newly adopted Law on Copyright and Neighbouring Rights comes into force. After six months the level of music piracy drops to 25-30 percent.
The Chairman of IFPI Nicholas Garnett gives a lecture at the Police Academy in Szczytno on the possibilities of using the new law to effectively combat phonographic piracy in Poland

A huge breakthrough on the Polish music market. The sales of music reach peak levels.

1995

January 30 - February 3

February 1
The Ministry of Culture and Art grants ZPAV the rights of the Collective Rights Management Organization in the field of phonogram and videogram producers' rights. ZPAV initiates negotiations with broadcasters regarding remuneration for the broadcasting of its members' repertoire.

February 8
ZPAV presents the first golden and platinum certification award: gold for "Marysia Biesiadna"; (FORMAD 2), platinum for "Three Tenors Live"; (Polton).

March
Together with IFPI Warsaw ZPAV undertakes steps directed at Poland's accession to the Rome Convention and WTO/TRIPS Agreement.

March 19
The FRYDERYK Awards are presented for the first time. The ceremony takes place at the Polish Theatre in Warsaw.

June 15
ZPAV opens its first office at 12 Zbigniewa Herberta street in Warsaw.

December 5
The Ministry of Culture and Art grants ZPAV the right to collect share of the 3-percent blank carrier royalty, on behalf of the phonogram and videogram producers.

1996

January
The authors' society ZAiKS joins the hologram project.

January 23
The ZPAV Collecting Society signs its first agreement regarding the collection of remuneration from broadcasting of sound recordings. First blank carrier levies are collected through the Office of the ZAiKS, SAWP and ZPAV Plenipotentiary for Blank Carriers.

December 31
Throughout the year ZPAV participates in the works of the Ministry of Culture Commission for the Ratification of the Rome Convention. The President of Poland signs the Rome Convention on December 31.

1997

The ZPAV Collecting Society signs broadcasting agreements with the Polish Television and main commercial radio stations.

January
Artists and record companies organize help for victims of the flooding in the south of Poland. A concert "My Hope and Your Hope"; is being organized in front of the Polish Television building. PolyGram Polska i Sony Music Polska release special records -- funds from the sale of these records are being used to support the victims.

1998

The ZPAV Collecting Society for the first time distributes among the eligible producers the funds collected on their behalf as remuneration for the use of sound recordings.

October 5
ZPAV, FOTA (representing the biggest Polish and international film companies) and BSA (Business Software Alliance -- the organization representing, among others, Microsoft) with the support of PHARE Audiovisuel found the Anti-Piracy Coalition.

December 4
The Anti-Piracy Coalition and the Polish artists urge the state authorities to introduce amendments to the copyright law and to counteract the rising tide of music piracy.

December 5
"Win Over Piracy" Day.

December 22
The Anti-Piracy Coalition's Golden Badge Award is presented for the first time for most efficient police anti-piracy activities.

1999

ZPAV participates in drafting of the amendments to the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Law.
The ZPAV Collecting Society signs an agreement with the Polish Radio.

October 19-21
Meeting of the Executive Committee of the IFPI European Regional Board in Warsaw. The European heads of international record companies attend series of meetings with state authorities, including Head of Parliament Maciej Płażyński, Minister of Interior Marek Biernacki, Head of the Main Customs Office Zbigniew Bujak, Head of the President's Office Ryszard Kalisz and discuss the need for introducing amendments to the copyright law and more efficient fight against music piracy. At the press conference at the Bristol Hotel they speak about the illegal trade of pirate CDs at the Dziesięciolecie Stadium in Warsaw.

December 16
The Phonographic Academy is founded.

2000

January 24
ZPAV, as the first private sector organization signs a cooperation agreement on the exchange of information and assistance in intellectual property protection with the Main Customs Office.

January 26
The Golden Barrier Awards for most efficient customs actions against piracy are presented for the first time.

July 5
The "Kayah & Bregović" album reaches the level of over 500 thousand sold copies and is presented with the first diamond certification award.

July 22
Amendments to the copyright law come into force. The new provisions allow for more efficient prosecution of piracy, the term of protection for phonogram producers is extended to 50 years.

October 20
At the initiative of ZPAV Polish artists, creators and phonogram producers urge the Minister of Culture and National Heritage Kazimierz Ujazdowski to take steps towards more efficient execution of the amended copyright law provisions.

October 24
Together with the performing artists organizations (SAWP and STOART) ZPAV forwards an appeal to the Chairman of the National Radio and Television Board Juliusz Braun to increase the share of Polish music in radio and television broadcasts.

October 25-26
ZPAV participates in the organization of a seminar on intellectual property protection in the digital environment in Kraków. The seminar is organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

October 30
The OLIS chart is published for the first time. It is a weekly chart based on information from music sales points throughout Poland and compiled by an independent research company PENTOR.

November 9
The Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek issues a decision on the establishment of a Intergovernmental Committee for the Prevention of Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Infringements. ZPAV had called for the creation of such committee for many months.

2001

January - September
ZPAV representatives participate in the sessions of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Prevention of Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Infringement. In September ZPAV presents the Committee with an analysis of the state of copyright law compliance in Poland.

January 1
ZPAV begins to monitor internet sites and FTP servers in search for unauthorized music files. Letters are being sent to the site owners and network administrators with a request to delete such files.

July 11
ZPAV celebrates its 10th anniversary. The group Varius Manx receives a special award for the biggest amount of gold and platinum award certifications in the 10-year history of ZPAV.

July 13
ZPAV and the performing organizations SAWP and STOART again protest against the inadequate share of Polish music in radio and TV broadcasts. The organizations urge the Chairman of the National Board of Radio and Television to act upon those broadcasters who refuse to comply with the provisions of the law on radio and television and licence conditions and broadcast less than 30 percent of Polish repertoire recordings.

October 30
At a press conference ZPAV informs about submitting 40 crime notices against illegal sound recordings traders at the Dziesięciolecie Stadium in Warsaw. A hidden camera film is presented at the conference which reveals the faces of the traders for the first time.

November 27-29
Together with the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Justice ZPAV organizes in Radziejowice near Warsaw a seminar on the subject: "Practical Aspects of Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Protection in Poland in the Aspect of Poland&'s Accession to the EU". The seminar is attended by judges and prosecutors from all regions of Poland.

2002

May
The first ZPAV Collecting Society Inspector visits commercial premises where music is played in order to sign the relevant agreement for the public performance of sound recordings.

October
Further amendments to the Polish copyright law come into force, in connection with the harmonization of the Polish legislation with international standards (including the 1996 WIPO Conventions). ZPAV is one of the organizations consulting the draft amendments.

2003

June 2
The Anti-Piracy Coalition initiates an information campaign to fight intellectual property protection rights infringements in computer networks. Letters are sent to 627 biggest Polish companies and 84 academic institutions in Poland.

June 25
The Board of ZPAV by way of its decision establishes the Polish Music Foundation. The Foundation is to support musicians at difficult times of their life.

2004

ZPAV, within the framework of the Anti-Piracy Coalition, together with the Authors' Society ZAiKS, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Culture coordinated a research on the awareness of intellectual property protection among junior high school students. The results of the study will be used to develop a special educational project for young people, raising their awareness of IPR issues and shaping appropriate attitudes towards IPR theft.

January - March
ZPAV signs agreements on the exchange of information with the Customs Houses in Warsaw, Biała Podlaska, Łódź and Przemyśl.

February 26
Together with the performing artist organization SAWP, ZPAV calls on the government to lower the VAT rate on sound recordings.

May 3
In the annual US government report on intellectual property rights protection throughout the world (USTR Special 301 Report) Poland is moved down from the Priority Watch List status to Watch List status.

June
Provisions on the control of optical discs production come into force. ZPAV long advocated for implementing such provisions and participated in their drafting.

July
On behalf of the Anti-Piracy Coalition ZPAV urges the Polish government to take immediate action against the distributors of pirate products along Poland's western border.

July 20
The Polish Music Foundation established by ZPAV receives the status of a public benefit organization.

July 22
In a report on worldwide piracy in 2003, published in London, IFPI lifts Poland off the list of ten countries where fighting piracy is a priority.

October 5
ZPAV calls on the Ministry of Culture to grant phonogram producers the same term of protection as is provided for authors (75 years).

October 13-14
ZPAV hosts an international meeting of phonogram producers' organizations from all over the world.

November 9
ZPAV representatives: Plenipotentiary -- Marek Staszewski and Anti-Piracy Coordinator -- Jan Bałdyga are honoured by the Minister of Culture Waldemar Dąbrowski with the distinctions: Of Merit To the Polish Culture.

2005

March 16
An agreement is signed between ZPAV and the Section of Aggregators and Audiovisual Content Providers (SADZA) regarding cooperation in the field of mobile phone content.

May
ZPAV Collecting Society Inspectors operate in all regions of Poland.

November
The General Assembly of ZPAV’s members is convened. At the assembly the New Board and the Board of Auditors are elected.

March
ZPAV signs an agreement with Nielsen Music Control on monitoring music in 42 Polish radio stations and providing airplay charts of the most often played recordings.

April
ZPAV starts the first stage of educational campaign within the framework of Antipiracy Coalition under the title “Be original”. The educational program, which promotes legitimate ways of using intellectual property by young people, is sent to all secondary schools in Poland.

September
ZPAV joins the international educational campaign under the Polish name ‘Kids, music and the internet’. The campaign intended for children and their parents focuses on the issues of legitimate and illegal music uploads and downloads.

2007

January
ZPAV represents music industry during the World Day of Customs, organised by the Ministry of Finance under the banner of “No to counterfeits and piracy”. Customs officers are granted awards for efficient action against infringements of intellectual property rights. Blue Café, a popular Polish group performs at the event.

February
The Board of ZPAV decides to sign an agreement with STX Records sp z o.o. on the organisation of ‘Fryderyk Award’ Ceremony in the years 2007-2010
ZPAV participates in the Safe Internet Day organised by NASK and Nobody’s Children Foundation. During a press conference ZPAV’s representatives explain the threats of sharing music on the internet. The participants receive leaflets “Young people, music and the internet” and software able to search the computer for any illegal music files.

June
As a result of ZPAV’s action against internet piracy www.osiolek.com, one of the most popular services which facilitates sharing music files in p2p networks, stops its operation and informs users about the decision on its website.

November
The next General Assembly of ZPAV’s members is held. The main point of the assembly is the discussion over the changes in the statutes of the association.
ZPAV distributes information materials and software for the audit of computer resources to over 500 companies and 700 academic institutions in Poland. Such activity is an element of educational campaign organised by the Anti-piracy Coalition.

2008

February
Once again ZPAV participates in Safe Internet Day organised by the Nobody’s Children Foundation and NASK and indicates how to stay safe and legal while using music on the internet.

April
Within the framework of educational campaign carried out by the Anti-piracy Coalition ZPAV organises free of charge training sessions for IT specialists who manage computer networks in firms and academic institutions. The sessions focus on the legality and security within the computer networks.

September
ZPAV decides to prolong the contract with STX Records sp. z o.o. for the organisation of the next two Fryderyk Awards Ceremonies (in 2011 and 2012).

October
The contract with Nielsen Music Control is extender for another year. The number of monitored stations is increased to 52. The program ‘Be original’ is continued. In the 2nd stage a presentation entitled “Internet – facts and threats” is showed in secondary schools throughout Poland.

2009

July
ZPAV, in co-operation with ZAIKS and STOART, starts a new service called dj.zpav.pl. The service makes it possible for a DJ to obtain a licence to copy recordings on a one-stop-shop basis.

November
